Hi, Admin, I'd also highly recommend Zone Alarms, which is VERY strong firewall software to prevent breakins and spyware.
But my partner and I got sick to death of viruses and spyware, and security patches (not to mention crashes) and having to support our parents...got us and our parents all Macs. Problem GONE and so incredibly simple. Still use Norton Antivirus to stamp out Windows viruses before they can be passed along.
A class I had on Computer Forensics by SFPD CSI was really astonishing on how frighteningly simple it is to break in to Windows (XP, 2000, 98, etc.) on wireless and take control. I figured out how to disable the broadcast name of my wireless base station so no one can see it, and how to encrypt it with a "WEP" password, too.
I was wondering, how do people put up those cool animated images by their name? And how to include images in board posts? Thanks in advance. --Jamey

Oh yes. Zone Alarm is an important tool to have as well. I use it and swear by it. I also use Norton's Anti-Virus and Spyware Blaster.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<<<The method for inserting an avatar into your screen name are is basically the same as inserting a photo into a posting. The only difference is you have to be logged in, and go to your profile. Click on your screen name and look for "Modify Profile". Along the left hand side, you'll see different categories. Look for the area where you can insert the URL for your own avatar. Have the image hosted at imageshack or tinypic or any other service that you want to use. Paste the URL into the area provided and go to the bottom of the page. Click "Modify Profile". You should be able to see your avatar after that. If anyone has any problems doing this, you can e-mail me the pic you want to use and I'll do it for you. >>>>
Remember to keep the AVATAR to a maximum of 100X100 or less, if possible. You can do a search on the internet for free animated avatars if you'd like, or you could even insert a photo of your own as long as you keep it within the size limits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just one more thing.......if you put a picture into one of your postings, please, please, PLEASE.....keep it to a reasonable size. Re-size the pic if necessary. I know I've been guilty of inserting larger photos in older postings but I've learned my lesson.

Papa Admin ... HELP!
1.) When I post something new and then attempt to return to the home page via the "Home" link, I am returned to that most recent post's edit/preview page (every time). To get back to the most updated 'HOME' I have to log off, and then log on again.
What is this "tech-tardy" Irish flatfoot doing wrong?2.) In one post you mentioned subscribers that loiter on here ...
If one uses the upper left window's "X" to log off, rather than the sites "Log Off" link, is one still shown as logged on or has one actually logged off?Appreciate any help you can provide ...

To get back to the most updated 'HOME' I have to log off, and then log on again. >>> wow...I don't know what to tell you on that one. That doesn't happen to me. Does anyone else have the same problem?? Do you hit the "back" button on your screen?? I've never heard of this problem happening to anyone. After posting, hit "post reply" or "post" or whatever it tells you to do after completing your post. You should see what you just posted. After that, I'd just go to "Home" and hope to see the Main screen of the site. As far as just clicking the X in the top right hand corner to log out, I wouldn't do it that way. Just to be on the safe side, I'd log out where it says "logout". I'm not sure if members are still showing as logged on if they exit that way. I've never tried that, so I'd have no way of knowing. And my crystal ball hasn't been working too well lately, so I can't see other members when they log off that way......(boy am I grumpy today! Where's my coffee? )

Flblue, may be a quirk in your computer. Sometimes when the memorygets cluttered wiht too many cookies and such individual drives get a little snarly. See if you have some excess clutter you can jettison, and then try again.

<<<<<Sorry Poppa Admin. I'm not trying to tel you how to run the site, but I jst feel that Joe, Jim, Robert, Jason and all our fallen brothers and sister earned a special place. Yes, we have the memorial here in DC with 17,000 names, but I like the idea of having a place in cyber space since the wall is a far way off for some, and since some, because their deaths weren't considered l-o-d, won't make it there. Doesn't mean they weren't good cops, and weren't close and imprtant to us, just that they didn't meet a bureaucratic test. >>>>>
I'm going to look into doing this but I'd like to get an idea as to how others feel about it also. I know you're not telling me what to do here. This is part of what this place is all about. Everything that gets suggested isn't going to happen but sometimes, things do get done! I'm going to start a poll on this subject in a separate thread to gauge member's interest in this. But, even if the poll doesn't register significant interest, I may add the area anyway. And if possible, make it only available to registered members who are actually logged in when they want to view the thread and the memorials.

Sometimes our members put links up to various sites, whether their newpaper sites, g/l sites, video sites or just various and sundry sites. In any event, I'm going to show you how to put a link up with your own description of what the site is about...or your own description of the lnk. so....put your thinking caps on.....you can always refer back to this posting if you forget how to do what's being taught here. You can show a link and not have the link address showing. You can insert your own description. Example: unfreeze.proboards54.com/index can be shown on a link as: BLUE PRIDE MESSAGE BOARDHere's how: Give it a try and see how it works. I've been doing it for a while and I like this method. Just don't go crazy with it!! You know who you are!!

Firefox is much better, right Jon? It's SO much better than Internet Explorer. This is not BluePride Tech Support specific but I didn't know where else to put it, so I'm putting it here! It's in regard to Limewire and how it is another unsecured program out there. If you use it, be very careful. DENVER - District Attorney Mitch Morrissey is warning people to avoid file sharing programs, in particular LimeWire. Computer file-sharing programs such as LimeWire could give criminals a portal to steal sensitive information from computers. Denver District Attorney warns users of LimeWire it could be used for identity theft. The Denver District Attorney is warning people about a file-sharing program that could be used to steal their personal information. Morrissey says during an investigation into identity theft, Denver Police discovered personal information, tax records and bank account information of 75 different people and businesses at one Denver apartment. "We're talking about identity thieves accessing parts of your computer that are private, that has the type of information that could be used to empty your bank account that could be used to create your identity," Morrissey said. While no arrests have been made yet, Morrissey noted that nearly all of the potential victims used the free file sharing program LimeWire and felt that the public needed to know the risks associated with it. "We're not limiting it to just that (program), it's file sharing period," Morrissey said. Ward Spangenberg, a computer security consultant showed 9NEWS how LimeWire works. "You load it onto your computer to allow you to share movies, MP3's and documents," Spangenberg said as he prepared to download the program onto his laptop computer. Within five minutes of downloading the software, he started counting. "There's one, two, three, four," Spangenberg said. A few seconds later, he counted nearly 50 attempts by outside users to access his computer. He quickly removed the program from his computer. Spangenberg says LimeWire is very popular among young people. That is why Morrissey urged parents to double check the family computer to see if their children had downloaded it. Spangenberg says while there may be legitimate reasons to use file sharing software, he has encountered few instances where that would hold true. He urges any computer user to avoid such software and if they have downloaded it, to remove it. Even with the best computer security, Spangenberg says LimeWire and similar programs can bypass tough firewalls. "If you got a firewall or a virus checker, they're going to look at it when it comes through the door. If I already installed a client, in this case LimeWire, it's talking out, everything is trusted, it's going outbound, so the computer doesn't stop it, it says, 'Hey go have a good time do whatever,'" Spangenberg said.

Ref: Foxfire ...
Just started using Foxfire. Anybody else have the following or similar experiences with it?
1.) Response time slower than I.E. 2.) After opening a link/page from an original/main web page, the original automatically refreshes every 30 seconds or so without using the "Refresh" icon/button. 3.) While moving a diminished window to reposition it on the screen, it catches and staggers or "stutters" as its dragged.
I've tried to find info about these issues in the "Help" reference, but haven't had any luck in resolving them.Any suggestions/fixes would be appreciated!

Well....with Firefox.... in the beginning I did notice that it took a little longer for web sites to load up. But after a while it was fine. I didn't have any of the other things you described though. Again I'd suggest frequent maintainance to keep it running free of problems. Yesterday, with all the wind and rain, I noticed my computer was running really slow. In fact my whole cable system was down for a while. But today it seems a lot better. Firefox is definitely better than Internet Explorer any day. Firefox has a new second edition out now, from what I've heard. I'm probably going to download it in the next few days. It now includes automatic spell-check among other newer features.

I've changed the title of this thread to more accurately identify it's purpose. It is now called "TECHNICAL ISSUES AND BOARD HELP". Remember that I'm not a computer wizard or geek, so I may not have all the answers. But I'll do my best.
Anyway
#1: I added an AMBER ALERT ticker near the top of the home page.
#2: Regarding Firefox #2: I haven't downloaded it yet because I've been reading that it has a couple of glitches in it so far. It's only out a few days so this is to be expected. I'm going to give it a while before I start using it. In any event, Firefox #1 is still a great option over Internet Destroyer....uh..I meant Internet Explorer.....
