OK, pet peeves....hmmm....let me roll up my sleeves and have at it!
Ricky Martin and awards.......I agree 100% with Carroll about Ricky. I don't think he deserves any awards for anything. But he's like 7000 rungs down the ladder in the food chain of anything important. And most awards are bullsh*t anyway. They're another of my pet peeves. They are meaningless. They just feed undeserving egos. The best award you can get is the knowledge that you yourself made some kind of difference. Personally, I don't need a certificate or a plaque or a statue. I'm not that small.
Another pet peeve is Rosie! I can't stand her and she's not a good representative of the community. Let her resolve her inner anger issues and work on shrinking that enormous head of hers.
Also some of my current peeves: Noisy neighbors, snow before Halloween, bad drivers, sore winners, people who talk sh*t about people and things without having adequate knowledge of what they're talking about, and my latest: The term "Well Said". That drives me up a wall. Never has a phrase gotten under my skin so quickly as that one has!!

OK, pet peeves....hmmm....let me roll up my sleeves and have at it! (Clip...) Also some of my current peeves: ... snow before Halloween (Clip.) YIKES!... "A powerful storm system bringing a mix of rain and snow chugged up the East Coast, knocking out power to more than a half-million customers Saturday. The nor'easter is expected to dump up to 10 inches or more throughout the region, and the unseasonably early snow has already broken records in New York City." I'm thinking this presents some challenges for our brothers and sisters in blue as well. Be safe out there, BluePriders. Bear ____________

Okay... back to serious stuff. Anybody have thoughts about the police action against the protesters in Oakland (or has there been much news about it on the east coast?) Even Oakland mayor Quan has now flip-flopped and issued a public apology for her previous stance and the police action.
For sure, police need to keep order! But, video of police lobbing a concussion grenade to disperse rescuers helping a seriously injured person has enraged the public on the left coast. The injured man, a returned Afghanistan veteran, had been shot in the head by a teargas canister fired by police. Here, it has become a "perfect storm" of circumstances, following a whole series of events with public perception of police brutality.
Thoughts anybody?

Did you know that members of the Tea Party often carry guns and rifles to their rallys? Did you know that many Florida Sherrifs are Tea Party members? Did you know that they often call for somebody to kill Barak Obama dispite the fact that simply saying that is a federal offense? Did you know they say these things while sheriffs deputies look on while nodding their approval? Nobody picketing Wall street has been found carrying a gun. Unllike Tea Party members, nobody picketing Wall street is advocating overthrowing the govenment. Unlike Tea Party members, Wall street picketers respect the office of the president and would never cause him any harm. Personally, I'm truly more afraid of the Tea Party than I am of American citizens excersizing their right to protest against Wall Street greed. I never hear of Tea Party members being maced or clubbed by the police dispite the fact that they display guns and rebel flags while spouting non stop hate. Indeed, their meetings are potentially much more violent. Law enforcement goes where they are told to go. And they police who they are told to police. Thats why Wall Street protesters get hurt and wind up in jail while Tea Baggers continue doing what they like and saying what they say with impunity.

If the attendees are licensed to carry, it is their right. I'm not a TP'er or , thank god, an Occupy Wall Street advocate. I'm better than that. But I don't recall any TP'ers defecating on Police cars, using drugs, becoming violent or raping anyone at their rallies. On the other hand, the OWS people have no problem engaging in this behavior. They also have a right to express themselves and they did this in September. What they don't have a right to do is set up camp in a private park, harass civilized workers as they go to and from their jobs, disturb the neighbors with their silly drum circles (as if that nonsense is going to do anyone any good), sh*t and piss where they want to, discriminate against people supposedly protesting with them who don't fit into the profiles that the organizers think they should have, and refuse to feed these same people. And they don't have a right to endanger themselves or other citizens with drug use, makeshift generators which can lead to massive fires(which will be blamed on everyone else but themselves) and they most certainly don't have the right to bait the police to prove their point. They conveniently edit their videos to make it seem as if the Police are instigating violence. Little do they realize that the raw unedited video shows up afterwards to disprove what they do. The media in the USA hasn't been very honest in reporting what is going on there. (In NY anyway) Fiend attacks 'Occupy' protester in her tentThe battle of Wall Street: Violence erupts as police clash with protesters after they force Bloomberg to back down over 'eviction'New Hampshire woman, Justina Jensen, tried to pimp out teen she met at Occupy protest: police In the report from the British news site, I happen to know some of those higher ranking officers who are being baited, attacked and set upon by these bums. It makes me wish, however temporarily, that I wasn't retired. The links provided are just samples of what has been going on. There are more floating around. By the way, in case anyone wants to know..... Blue Pride and Blue Pride Radio officially condemn Occupy Wall Street wherever they appear in the United States. WE definitely DON'T embrace it or them.

If the OWS group would put as much emphasis on organizing to make a difference in the financial situation much of the country is in today, by making and following through with plans to vote their beliefs, I would have more respect for them.
What in the world do they believe they can accomplish by having campouts (not necessarily on publicly owned lands especially) for a month or two? The financial situation many are facing, did not develop over months or even a few years. It has been over a decade or more in the making.
Of course there is no way to determine exactly, but how many of these "protestors" even bothered to go to the polls to express their concerns? How many of these "protestors" are followers who are joining the effort just to belong to something and have no right to be offended because they haven't worked a day in their life? How many have lived off the very liberal social welfare programs that benefit so many, who have never contributed to the system? I see many that scream the loudest for what they claim is deserved, yet have done nothing to earn these benefits, while others who have earned assistance or contributed towards their share, are denied benefits.
The problem is not so cut and dried, I realize, but they aren't getting the attention of the working class, because we are busy working.
Just my two cents.....

MANY good thoughts, folks. Public and civil safety are primary, in my view. And, the right of peaceful protest is basic and guaranteed in our system. It would seem the dynamics of events have been different between east/west coasts. I certainly agree the most powerful expression of views needs to be exercised in the voting booth!

My latest (or should I say, one of my latest) pet peeve is the increasing number of online sites that have to do with GLBT issues and sometimes GLBT LEO issues, that have gone offline in the last couple of years. Whether because of money problems, lack of readers,.....whatever the reason. It is so frustrating for me because I try to utilize some of these sites for material to bring to our members attention. Other sites pop up from time to time but it seems more and more that their content is filled with fluff as opposed to real solid information about our communities. It's pretty frustrating. Just my little vent for the day!

Here's a photo. I young firefighter shared it, he doesn't say say he is gay, but he did share this. I can actually identify with it. I think a lot of guys here could as well. Attachments:

Greg, I couldn't agree more! And, while they don't go to meetings "dressed" like the two boys on the right, it pisses me off the way those at the helm of a once great fraternal organization of criminal justice professionals (most of whose members happen to be gay) have turned it into a "gay" organization (most of whose members happen to be criminal justice professionals). Being from NYC I don't think I need to identify the organization of which I speak. They identify with the gay community, not the law enforcement community. They hold fundraisers for gay causes, but not once (in recent years) to help officers or their families who have suffered in the line of duty. Sorry for the bitching, but you hit a raw nerve with your "right on" posting.

It's where I am at. I don't feel like I am a part of that community.

I wholeheartedly agree with Burner on this! (I know....shocker!) That group also has not had a meeting in the GLBT Community Center in almost a year after we were a fixture there soon after it opened in 1983. You have to wonder about the rea$on$ why. They now meet mostly in bars. Hmmm....off-duty cops, guns, alcohol, bars.....what other fraternal organization in New York could get away with that? The NYPD most definitely frowns on that for everyone else, why is this allowed? All under the guise of "giving back" to the community. Hogwash.
As for not feeling like part of the community, at this point in my life, I agree with Greg. It's developed over the last 10 or more years for me. Of course, I am part of it, but now on my own terms. I'm not a Stepford gay as so many others are. So many others....is not exactly a good description. I know more and more people who are feeling like me. The community has dumbed down so much. I hate saying that but it seems to be the truth. The priorities are so f*cked up lately. And that, in my opinion, lets people take advantage of our community. The recent serious upturn in anti-gay violence, including murder, is a glaring example. After the fact, these almost meaningless vigils do nothing. Nothing. Except maybe bring people together to mourn the loss or the violence. But after that, it's back to business as usual. Nothing, or next to nothing gets done.
I could go on and on as a lot of us could but before this goes on much further, I'll just say I'm disheartened at the state of my community. And reaching the age that I have (even though I'm young!) I care about ME first. The years of active participation and trying to do the right thing over the years.....to see it flushed down the toilet.... has woken me up. I've done what I've done and now I let others do what they do. Good, bad or indifferent. You get tired of seeing the accomplishements that have been made, get discounted and invalidated by everyone who thinks they can do it better. And then FAIL miserably, but never admitting it. OK...let me stop!
Also, speaking of pet peeves.......does anyone else get annoyed when they read someone in print or online, say, "methinks"? Get the memo, it doesn't make you look intelligent! It makes you look phony and affected! ;D Actually, "get the memo" is pretty annoying, too!

Methinks we should use this thread more often. Work places are far too tense these days - except for Fire Department - but even at FD we get choked at people's ME attitude. Example: a sixty + farmer burning his winter junk when winds of 25mph are blowing. Then he is amazed the junk fire has spread. We cant bitch about it hough, we love the adrenaline ride to the scene, the anticipation f your role, the aching muscles, the camaraderie, yelling at a guy for whatever and then joking about it later and finally cleaning up as a team. The glue that got us together was stupid farmer. But our calls like that are not that frequent, but lately one a day. In immigration the norm is to lie. Lie and then make a bigger lie when caught out. Managers try to be huggy feely and say 'Wouldn't you lie for a better life?' Yeah, maybe little lies, but not about membership in various organizations, fraud over 5000, who you are. Better not go down this path, and BTW Canadians have more ability to do something about this than US counterparts. They are amazed when i speak to them, what we can do. Anyway, I feel for you guys on the front lines. You see the results of bad policy. You see how the lack of leadership and the untruths, misspokes etc and how they have trained society to care less about anyone else. We had an MVC the other night, guy was impaired, driving at at least 130 mph. He hit a car, from behind, on a four lane. The scene spread out over 1 mile. He'll get a good lawyer and they'll find out that Constable forgot to do something and get a slap on the wrist. The lack of caring is everywhere. We need to stop growth, stop the ideal of being rich like Trump. It ain't going to happen. And when you are that rich, why don't you give money back to help people. You can't spend it and when you do it is on stupid things. As for our community, lets do more bowling, tennis, flag football, knit offs and less wrist bending at a bar.
