What an awesome assemblage of hunks and our BluePride family member Veronica! Thank you for posting that pic, Dale! Of all who attended, I suppose I know Carroll best. I wag my tail happily when I see him, being that we are closer in age and have a close family resemblance. Carroll is my brother!
GOSH would I have liked to be at the Florida LEGAL gathering in St. Pete. The Flamingo gay resort is a fun venue and our Florida brothers and sisters in blue are a panic of FUN!
Also, I want to mention that Carroll is very active (and on the Board, I believe) in Step Out Sarasota. It is a vibrant and engaged GLBTQ community center in Sarasota County that supports and enhances the quality of life for everyone in the community.
The Step Out Sarasota Mission:
To enrich, strengthen, and support the GLBTQ residents, organizations, and businesses within the greater Sarasota area.
I have posted a couple times about the documentary "Gen Silent" (Generation Silent). A generation such as "gen x or gen y or millennials," Gen Silent applies loosely to those of us born 1926-1945, and especially LGBTs for the "silent" part. We grew up in the McCarthy era, targeted with hate and homophobia at a time prior to Stonewall when we had to hide for our safety. It is normal human experience to internalize the "rules," morals and mores of the time in which we grew up. For LGBTs, that also very frequently means internalized homophobia.
The Gen Silent generation now has a great many health concerns, many directly traceable to the aspects and consequences of the time in which we came of age. In my studies, I learned Gen Silenters (esp. men, but including all LGBTs) have a higher morbidity rate and mortality 8-20 years LESS than the overall community (even EXcluding AIDS factors.) Plus, we are now seniors who have all the usual health concerns of aging.
I sent a copy of the Gen Silent documentary to Carroll, along with the Instructor's Guide and Workbook. Carroll has now used it and RUN with it! He has worked up a presentation for the HIV/AIDS Network of Southwest Florida in conjunction with Step Out Sarasota in promoting Gay Men's Awareness Days. I am so excited that Carroll is doing this! On Tuesday, Sept. 24th, Carroll is presenting the Gen Silent video and lecture program on issues faced by LGBTs as we age and face physical and social issues. Anyone who has attended Carroll's programs knows he is thee AMBASSADOR of EDUCATION and ADVOCACY for LGBTs. This will be an outstanding program! THREE CHEERS for Carroll... and for all of us!
The Gen Silent trailer:
Respectfully,
Bear
