Gay Rights Advocates Boycott Barilla After President of Pasta Maker's Remarks
The president of Barilla is apologizing for saying that he would never use a gay family in the pasta maker's ads.
Guido Barilla said in an Italian radio interview that his pasta is for the traditional family and said gay people could eat another pasta if they did not like his message.
"We accept his invitation to not eat his pasta," said Aurelio Mancuso, president of gay-rights group Equality Italia, in a statement in Italian.
Boycotting Twitter users shared the hashtag #boicottabarilla, or "boycott Barilla."
But Barilla quickly walked back his comments.
"With reference to remarks made yesterday to an Italian radio program, I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding, or if they hurt someone's sensitivity," Guido Barilla said in a statement. "In the interview I simply wished to underline the central role the woman plays within the family."
Gay marriage is not legal in Italy.
He added, "For clarity, I would like to point out that: - I have the utmost respect for anyone, without distinction of any kind.
- I have the utmost respect for gay people and for everyone's right to express themselves. I've also said -- and I would like to reiterate -- that I respect gay marriages.
- In its advertising, Barilla represents the family - because it's what welcomes everyone and what has always been identified with our brand."

Well......you said it.....now you take it back.....maybe you should've thought about what you said before you said it. I think I'll be switching brands. I have no intention of buying Barilla Pasta from here on in. Too bad. It was pretty good but there are other decent pasta brands out there.... Arrivaderci, Barilla!

As of now, I haven't even thought about buying Barilla. But I read something on a gay website about the fact that the owners have been in business for over 100 years and that even if the guy who made those dumb statements and then apologized were to step down, another family member would take his place. But what was pointed out in the article was the fact that by "boycotting", it would have a negative impact on the regular working stiff who goes to work every day at that company. Like I said, I haven't bought Barilla but now I think about what that article said. I'm confused. The big-wigs are still going to be making their money but I'd hate to see anyone laid off if the boycott does actually have an effect. Right now, though, I'm still not going to buy any.

I've been reading in the news about how Google has changed some of it's policies and that your information is now able to be shared with advertisers using your likeness, name, etc. I don't like that one bit. Here on BP there is an admin option to have Google installed here within the site. We had it on the previous versions but I opted out on this new one.
I've heard about a few other search engines that do not share your information. There are two that you sign up for and, I believe, maybe pay a fee for. Being the tightwad that I am, I'm not planning on using them at this point. But there's another which I do use from time to time and it's totally free. It's called "Duck duck Go". Silly name, I know, but so is Google.
Here are links for the 3 that I've mentioned:

Right now, though, I'm still not going to buy any. I fully agree, BluePride. I was at the store faithfully following my shopping list (which means I was buying every impulse item I saw, especially if covered with / filled with / or made with chocolate) when I noticed the entire Barilla section was on sale. Nope. Didn't buy any.
While I do see Tommy's point about unintended consequences, I'm not sure it is possible to avoid it totally. I think the larger point is worth it. Yes, I'm thinking there ARE enough of us and responsible allies (a LOT of them!) who join with us to fight hate and ignorance. We DO make a difference.
Oreos, Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Levis, American Airlines, Microsoft ... all received grief for taking a stand WITH us. There may be aspects of some of these that individuals do NOT like... but the companies are putting their money where their mouth is to help LGBTs and we can influence that. Remember Target? Yup... we changed corporate policies.
Take a look... www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/28/oreo-backlash-companies-anti-gay-boycott_n_1634767.html
Back at the store, next isle over, premium 78% cacao dark chocolate bars, product of Switzerland, were half off. I loaded up. That way, I can support the European worker (and domestic delivery workers, yadda yadda.) PLUS, dark chocolate is supposedly a good anti-carcinogen. I just now ate a square, along with a hot cup of green tea. OMG... I hope I'm not putting some medical worker out of a job. What's a pretty bear to do?
... okay, okay... I'm busted... I ate FOUR squares.

Ravetree.com Hushmail.com DuckDuckGo.com <-------FREE! MAN-OH-MAN... I'm ALL FOR PRIVACY. Short version of long story: I've been targeted and my place burglarized while I was away by parolees of Pelican Bay State Prison where I worked. One accidentally discovered my address and the word spread.
I am retired and no longer at PBSP. And, I am OUT to most everyone now. But, there are many BluePriders who are NOT out or for other reasons need their identity to be kept confidential. Soooo... Tommy, you are the best judge. Techie stuff is mostly a mystery to me. Let's DO whatever we need to do for our mutual security. I would be willing to chip in if there is a cost (but be gentle... I don't want to have to double up on my heart meds, HAHA! ... and remember, when I started college, premium gasoline was 13 cents a gallon!)
ANYway, I vote that I stand with you whatever you think best.
