Ok...I might as well just post this. It'll be all over the place tomorrow anyway.... Ex-NYPD cop from Nanuet pleads guilty to trying to have oral sex with boy, 13 A former New York City police sergeant accused of preying on an orphaned teenager pleaded guilty today to a reduced charge of trying to have oral sex with the child. Jaime Katz, 39, of (deleted), Nanuet, faces five years in prison when sentenced March 23 for first-degree attempted sodomy. Katz, an advocate for gay police officers, resigned from the police force on Tuesday. He had been an officer for 10 years. The 31-count indictment had accused Katz of sexually abusing the boy for six years, including at his family's Nanuet home and in Manhattan. The charges included having anal and oral sex with the boy as early as 2003. Katz is expected to plead guilty to additional charges in Manhattan on Feb. 10 involving the same case. Extremely sad. As a parent, my heart reallyy goes out to the poor lad he abused. I'm also sorry for Jamie, but at the same time I can't help but think of the enormous ill he's done to the boy as well as to our community.
His actions just reinforce what all the homophobes think about all of us and pretty well cancel out any good he may have done as an advocate for LGBT policing.
I accept that pedophilia is an illness and that like other poorly understood illnesses, alcohol and or drub addiction for example, it is hard to see the disease for the social stigma attached to it. My ex-wife and I reaised three girls to adulthood, and the idea that any of them might fall prey to a pedophile when they were young was truly scarey.
As I said it is an extremely sad case. I hope the boy gets what ever help he may need to get through this and I also hope Jamie gets the help he needs to deal with his illness, and to get through doing his time. That definitely won't be pretty!

First let me say that I believe the use of force or coercion/threats are always wrong no matter the age of the participants, but absent that I'm not into pointing fingers or making judgements. I know I'm going to ruffle some feathers but I believe this "one size fits all" mentality about at what age and with whom a person should enjoy sex is nonsense. Perhaps my own life experience is the reason for my view...and the experience of others is the reason for theirs.
I'm not about to get into a debate on whether or not a 13yo is "old enough to know what he's doing" but I know that when I was 13 I definitely knew....and I wasn't interested in anyone under the age of 20. Maybe I was an "early bloomer" as I know some guys who were virgins into their 20s, but I never regretted it and it never had any negative impact on my life. And I was not preyed upon either. In fact I was the one who went out looking (I didn't know the word "cruising" back then).
I'm probably in the minority on this (it wouldn't be the first time) but I believe that people who think teenagers are not engaging in sex, or SHOULD NOT engage in sex until the "age of consent" of 18 are unrealistic...as are the laws that consider one old enough to drive a car but too young to have sex.
There are those who say a 16 year old is "too young to know what he's doing" when it comes to sex, but old enough to know what he's doing when it comes to getting behind the wheel of a killing machine. There are those who say a 13 year old is too young to know what he's doing when is comes to sex, but have no problem saying to try a 13 year old "as an adult" when he kills someone.
In my parents' generation, marriage at age 14 was not uncommon and, in fact, my mom got married at 14 and my sister was born a year later. Today her dad would have been convicted of a felony and the family would have been torn asunder. And for what? To satisfy someone else's puritanical view of morality? In many parts of the world today early teenage marriage still is not uncommon. Some were not then (and are not now) ready at such a young age.... and some were (and are).
The culture in this country which was once Victorian has become, over the years, simply sex-phobic. Why else would we have sex offender registries so one can look it up to see if there's a sex offender living in your neighborhood... but no similar registry of those convicted of murder or manslaughter? Personally I'd feel more uneasy with a murderer living next door to me than a guy who at age 18 was caught having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend (or boyfriend for that matter) and was forced to register as a "sex offender" for years without end. Makes me glad I grew up in the 50s.

First, just let lme say that I'm sorry for not posting for the past week or so. Our computer died. Well, Stephen said that I killed it. Anyway, It's out at the repair shop and right now, I'm sitting in our neighborhood library using a free computer. I think that we as LGBT criminal justice professionals will be facing lots of bad press because of the Jamie Katz drama, and that's a shame. I do feel that when you are the head of an organization like GOAL, or any other group, your behavior must be above reproach. What Jamie did, makes us all look bad in the eyes of the public. I'm glad that at this point, the newspapers are not mentioning that he was a former president of GOAL. The bottom line is, having sex with underaged minors is against the law and Jamie broke the law.

Bottom line: A sexual relationship between a 30 something male or female and a 13 year old is wrong. Illegal, inappropriate and wrong. Even if the younger person is a willing participant, it doesn't make it right. And the fact that Jaime is was a police officer makes it even worse. There are probably more details within this case that we don't know about and will probably never know about. I know more than I want to about it already. But, Katz has to face the music over his actions. Doesn't matter if he was "led into it by another Sergeant" as he told authorities, according to the New York Times. That's a whole other story which should be addressed. But he's a grown man in a position of authority and responsibilty. He made serious errors in judgement and look at him now. No one put a gun to his head to get himself involved in this mess. I always liked Jaime even though he was such an arrogant p*ick. You just couldn't talk to him. He knew and was an expert on everything. Look where it got him. After he was suspended and was on modified assignment I tried to tell him what to expect as his case either progressed or languished. I was met with the same arrogance he displayed before he got in trouble. "Ahh...they have nothing on me...I'll be back to full duty in 2 weeks, you watch". Oh yeah? It was the same attitude that I'd get from other cops in serious trouble over the years. I was in a unit that specialized in supervising cops in jams and it was always the same thing. The "they've got nothing on me" attitude and most of them are in jail now.
Burner, we're in 2009, not 1919. In this supposedly civilized country, we don't marry 14 year olds. Maybe in some parts of the world or way back when, that was acceptable. In civilized society, we don't mess around with 13 or 14 year olds. I had raging hormones when I was a kid too and I woulda done it to mud and yeah, there were some adults who I woulda gone with in a hot second if I actually knew what to do with them. But I'm glad it never happened for me.
As far as his position with GOAL. Yes, he shamed the organization because once again the veterans have to answer for the stupidity of the latter day members. And he shamed his department and gay people in general. It's not the first time and it won't be the last time, unfortunately. This will happen again whether it's a gay cop or straight cop involved. But when it's a gay cop involved, we get doubly branded.
He has to answer for his actions and I'm sure the kid will hit the jackpot ($) eventually. Even though Jaime did wrong, I just hope he'll be in PC for his own safety and that he doesn't do anything even more stupid to himself. I'll leave it at that for now.

To just add to what you said Tommy, we as leaders need to keep in mind that our moral integrity must always be in place, and that as leaders we must maintain our professionalism. I recall that at a previous LEGAL International Conference in Florida, while president, Katz took out his "member" and had a badge draped around it, while former president Vivian Rodriguez and Treasurer Charles Blaha looked on and applauded. As leaders, we must not turn our back on improper behavior like that but must act to keep it professional. If you will recall, it was that conduct that led to the demand for his resignation as GOAL president. When we act in public, and hold a public title, we owe it to our community to keep it professional.

I remember that incident even though I wasn't present for it. (Thank God!) The day after it happened, 7 different people told me about what happened. I knew that it was witnessed by his good buddy Charlie but hadn't heard about the other one witnessing it till now. At first I thought the incident would die a natural death and I remember thinking that at the time, it wasn't something that would be grounds for him to step down as President but I was wrong on that, as I told you, George. Even though that conference was top notch and professional, there were a couple of participants who did stupid sh*t while hanging out and partying. What Jaime did was stupid but he wasn't the only one being stupid. I won't elaborate any more on this. But his "friends" should've pulled his coat but seeing as how they're just as dumb as he is, I guess I can see why they didn't.
When you're the President of an organization, you're not allowed to have as much fun as everyone else. You have to be above reproach in public. Advice to those newbies in newer organizations or those forming new ones.

Bluepride, you are so right when you say that "as president of an organization, you're not allowed to have as much fun as everyone else." You can't have as much fun because you are constantly watching everything and everybody to make sure that a professional attitude is always what the public sees. When we are in social venues, most members only think of having a good time. It is our responsibility to always set the tone because the buck stops with us. Oh, sometimes we can laugh, act silly and to a small extent "join the party" but our eyes must always be open as trouble can develop at any time, and our reputation can be lost. Jamie Katz has brought shame on all of us. There is absolutly no excuse for his behavior. I don't feel sorry for him because he was only thinking about his sexual needs and not the needs of that child or the needs of GOAL. As a correctons person, I know that we maintain seperate housing units for fallen law enforcement personnel. Jamie will not be housed in general population for his own safety. He will have two strikes against him. first, as a pedophile he must be kept away from other inmates as they will try to hurt him. As a former police officer, they have to keep him seperate for the same reason. I do remember that we have a prison in New Jersey, The Avenel Correctional Facility. They only house sex offenders and pedopholes in this facility and nobody else. They have good programs there that address that kind of behavior. It would be appropriate to send him there if that could be arranged. Anyway, he did the crime, so he has to do the time.

"Katz took out his "member" and had a badge draped around it"
Sounds like the kind of guy who would wipe his a** with the American flag. What a winner. Didn't anyone tell him that the shield stands for something, and hanging it on your junk might just be a tad disrespectful?
This guys sounds like a wolf in sheep's clothing. You can put a uniform on a predator, but they are still a predator.

Ex-Cop Admits Abusing Boy For Years NEW YORK — A sergeant formerly assigned to New York City’s Police Academy has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a young boy for several years. Jaime Katz pleaded guilty to second-degree sodomy and endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors said the sex abuse began in 2003 when the boy was 12 and continued into 2007. I have a strong feelling that IAB is not finished with this case. We all know that they're like a Pittbull. Once they get their teeth into something, they never let go. I may be wrong, but I think there is more going on here than meets the eye. I don't think that Katz was the only culprit involved in this shameful behavior. Trust me, this investigaion is not over.

Former NYC Cop From Nanuet Sentenced To 5 Years In Jail On Sodomy Charge A former New York City police sergeant began making sexual advances toward an orphaned 12-year-old boy just two weeks after the child's mother died, the victim's brother said at the officer's sentencing on sodomy charges yesterday. Jaime Katz frequently brought the child, who lived with a sibling in New York City, to his mother's home in Nanuet, where the abuse continued for years. That abuse drove the teen, now 18, to attempt suicide, the victim told the court in a statement. He attended Katz's sentencing but was too distraught to address him in court. The victim left the room as Katz, clad in an orange prison jump suit and handcuffs, was led into the court. Katz, a former head of the Gay Officers Action League, an advocacy group for law enforcement officers, pleaded guilty in January in Rockland to first-degree attempted sodomy. He admitted he tried to have oral sex with the 12-year-old on Feb. 14, 2003, at his family's house on Norwood Place in Nanuet. He also pleaded guilty in state Supreme Court in Manhattan to a felony count of second-degree sodomy and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. Link: Former NYC Cop From Nanuet Sentenced To 5 Years In Jail On Sodomy ChargeShameful, disgusting and mind boggling. Now we find out he let the kid play with his gun as well. To our New Yorkers and other east coasters, get ready for another round of ignorant remarks and being painted with the broad brush. Here we go again. Thanks, Jamie, for undoing all the hard work that so many of us basically gave our lives up to do. For what? So you could indulge in your own personal illegal and blatantly wrong self absorbed behavior. Your well-known arrogance has finally come home to roost. You have no conscience. And you shot a hole in an organization that worked so hard to better the lives of LGBT cops in New York and all across the country. Charlie Cochrane is looking down from Heaven and crying for the malignment of the organization that he started. And I hope there are at least a couple of current members of the debacle called GOAL New York who have trouble sleeping at night. They need to be constantly looking over their shoulders.

What a stupid, selfish bastard. I hope he rots. I don't think that GOAL New York will ever live this down. When I think of how twenty seven years of our hard work, dedication, and committment to the GLBT criminal justice community has been undermined by the actions of this scum bag I could cry. How does GOAL get Its dignity back? I have no idea.

You grit your teeth, take a deep breath, hold your head up and look forward to serve, protect and enforce the laws of your jurisdiction while believing in the constitution of the United States of America. You know the penal code inside and out, your uniformed is sharper than any other officer in the department, you are on time everytime to every shift, every call, every meeting, you work overtime without grimace, you enforced the laws while respecting the civil rights of every person you contact, you write complete and comprehensive reports, affidavits, and warrants, you keep your cruiser clean, you clean your duty weapon, you practice your target shooting, you take more in-service courses, you take self-defense courses, you keep your body fit, you keep your character solid, and you believe in yourself. You do this and MORE. And you do all of it better than the guy next to you. Then you go home, thank God for getting you home alive and kiss the man you make your life with, you love him truly, you love your family compassionly, and you love yourself first. When the day is done, you rest your body and your soul and as you lay your head down, know this day, you were a police officer and pray tomorrow will be just as good. PERIOD. TO SERVE AND TO PROTECT
