I'm glad the injuries to our brother and sister officers were relatively minor according to what I've seen on the news. I'm in agreement with you on everything you said.

BluePride, I subscribe to your thoughts exactly.
I disagree with much of what the Tea Party rallies stand for, but they hold them for a day then go away. These bastards who "protest" under the banner of OWS are nothing more than a bunch of coddled whiney pricks who not only disrespect those who are there to, literally, keep the peace, but who don't give a crap about inconveniencing the people who live or have to work in the area for OVER A MONTH!
Like Mayor Bloomberg I hold the right to protest as one of our most important freedoms, and I give the mayor credit for extraordinary patience before he found it necessary to say "enough is enough". For safety and sanitary reasons alone it was necessary to clear the park of the tents and assorted other "living facility paraphernalia" before allowing the protesters to reassemble. A privately owned park, even when required to be "open to the public", is NOT yours to set up housekeeping!
When this protest first began I was neutral - disagreeing with much of what the protesters had to say, yet supporting their right to say it. But what it has grown into is an oxymoronic call for their "rights" while purpetrating an outrageous assault on the rights of others. And what pisses me off more than anything else is TV coverage that delights in showing the interaction and aftermath of a confrontation between one of these spoiled brats and a police officer, while NEVER EVER showing footage of what may have led up to that confrontation.
They complain that because of Wall Street there are no jobs. How the hell would they know? I say Get of the grass, get off your ass and go out and look for one... instead of spending 30 days partying under the alias of "protest".
It's a shame that ProBoards has such strict standards that I can't say what I REALLY feel, without causing problems for BluePride.

So.....last night I was ready to be picked up by a friend to go out to a bar. Out my window I noticed a Police Emergency Service truck driving by my building. "Hmmm....that's not something you see every day here", I thought. After a few minutes I went downstairs to await my friend. Then I noticed at least 20 PD vehicles all over the street near the building 2 doors away. Of course I walked over towards the area but I didn't ask any of the many cops in and near the building what was going on. I used to hate it when people would do that to me. Even though I recognized a few faces on the scene. I just kept a low profile. The cops were going into the building with the large bullet proof shields and other equipment. I figured it was a barricaded perp or EDP (psycho). But....there were a LOT of radio cars and trucks and vans and unmarked cars. It had to be something major. Traffic was being detoured so it made it hard for my friend to get to my building anyway but eventually he did and we went on our merry way. (The bar sucked, by the way) This morning I saw news reports that it was a homicide. Just frikkin peachy, right??? A woman was shot in the torso and head and from what I've read the perp was her husband who was reported to be "ex-NYPD". Apparently he was collared this morning. I don't know if he was retired, fired, or a cop who resigned. I never heard of him. Not that it matters. I'm just pissed that it happened on my block even though it was inside an apartment. It happened in some new condos that opened about 3 years ago. Anyway, I hate my neighborhood and this doesn't help.

Yeah, so yesterday my street was crawling with media types. Newsvans, photographers, the whole bit. I was going to go up to a newsvan and ask the reporter if he worked for the Fire Department. Then when he'd say he didn't, I was going to tell him to get his g-d damned newsvan off the fire hydrant! Might've been a good idea to take a photo of the van and post it here and on other sites to expose the news guy. He'd do the same to a cop in a heartbeat. But I was busy and needed to get back into my apartment. ;D

Well my computer which has served me well for many years has apparently reached the end of the line. Thank the lucky stars I've been using an external hard drive to back up my hard drive for some time. Time will tell if I can retrieve everything on it when I eventually get a new computer. Now....my old backup computer is so obsolete that it's an adventure trying to use it, so that may be heading for the scrap heap pretty soon too.
At least I have my laptop to try to help things out till I get a new computer. I'm not totally in love with the laptop but it'll have to do for the time being. I may try to get my computer repaired so I can use it as a backup but all in all, I think it's time for a brand spanking new one. What sucks is the fact that it crapped out now during the busiest time of the year. Isn't that always the way things go???

The good news is that no one has posted "what bad happened" since December. The bad (mixed in with a little good) is what's been happening in the last day or so.
This weekend I spent the Easter time with my family. It was a nice time. When I left in the early afternoon, I had some chores to do and some shopping to do before the drive home. Well.....not more than 15-30 minutes after I left my family, there were reports of brush fires a few miles away. It was pretty concerning for me because I know the area and had been in the vicinity the previous day, on Easter Sunday. Well, due to the dry conditions, the extremely high winds and not having had rain for awhile, the fires spread...well, like wildfire. When I got home it was all over the news. Naturally I started following the news because of the area involved and also because I have friends and relatives who are on some of the volunteer departments in the area.
While following on TV, I also followed on the internet. I got a message from a relative that approximately 200 horses were in dire need of evacuation due to the proximity of the quickly spreading fires. It seems that not only me but others were furiously messaging people to look for people who had horse vans/ carriers to come to the rescue of the horses from all of the stables in the affected area. I'm glad that other friends of mine took up the cause and started to appeal to friends of theirs to also rally to help.
It turns out that due to all of the mobilization of folks on the net, phones, TV, etc.....the people all over Long Island made their way out to the fire area with their horse carriers and all of the horses were saved. There were people who arrived who had to wait hours to help. There were that many horse carriers that showed up. I'm glad I was able to help but I was also concerned about the spreading fires. Firefighters were injured, homes were burnt down and people were evacuated to shelters that opened up. There was also a fire company whos rig broke down and the entire company was lost in one of the forests. They had come from about 60 miles away and didn't know the area. I'm sure by now they were found.
As of now, the fires are still burning but I'm hoping they'll be under control by later today. Today I'm doing my chores at home but there's a good possibility I'll be loading up my car and returning out to the area where the fires are. I feel like I've got to do my part. More than the little bit I did last night. The area is a beautiful forest and woods area that is very close to the cemetery where my folks are so I'm naturally concerned that the area stay safe. It's not uncommon to see deer walking around while I'm driving past and on Sunday, I saw a couple of giant wild turkeys. They were huge. So I can imagine that some wild animals in the area were killed. And no civilian injuries that I've heard of yet.
The bad part is that the fires were so widespread and have done a lot of damage. The good part is I was able to help in probably a miniscule way but at least I did something. I'm just hoping that fire fires get extinguished and that the injuries are kept to a minimum. For people and animals alike.

Glad the horses were saved. After a relatively quiet 4 months for fires, we had five today. 4 came as we were putting out one at a farm. If the wid was stronger that one could have gone miles. Age catches up with you. Good luck tomorrow

Yesterday, as part of my process of renewing my armed guard license, I had to go through a firearms requal. I pass with flying colors as I did yesterday. But......here's what happened.
I got my box of 50, my target, my goggles and my sound protector headset. I put the headset on before I went downstairs to the range. Even though I knew I'd look like a dork. Another guy was finishing up his practice. I got myself situated and was ready to shoot. Now I forget if it was him or me who did this. It was early in the morning and I was tired but not groggy. But I just don't remember right now. It was probably me.
I took my stance and fired my first shot. And it felt like my left ear exploded. I was wearing the sound protector correctly. But my ear(s) was/were ringing something fierce. I've been in close proximity to fired guns numerous times (without protection) and never really had any adverse effects afterward. This time is different. I blew off my 50 rounds, cleaned up my brass, reloaded for the street, (I was in the Bronx, so you KNOW I loaded up for the street!)and brought my target to the range owner who gave me my paperwork and I was on my way.
My ears, specifically my left ear, were ringing. Severely. Everything I heard sounded metallic to me. Got home and situated and then went online to do some research on this problem. I had been thinking I had a bit of tinnitus the last few weeks and that maybe this incident was related to that. I'm still not sure. After a while, I took a few aspirin because that supposedly helps ringing in the ears according to what I saw online. After a few hours I thought things had subsided...and I guess they did. But the problem is still there today and driving my car really let me know how much it's still here. Aside from normal household ambiance and sounds, the car made me feel how different it was from the house. It seemed like every little crack and crevice in the street and on the highway was amplified 20X. My car is usually as quiet as a mouse but I felt like I was driving an old jalopy that had no shocks. Yikes.
I'm looking for an ENT Doctor because I want this checked out and I need some answers as to what exactly happened. In the past, any ringing in the ears went away after 1, 2 or 3 days. Whether from gunshots, concerts or other loud noises. This is something I'm not going to play around with. It has me very concerned.
Has anything like this happened to any of you?

The first time that happened to me was when did the final obsticle course in my Army basic training. It was at night and they fired all kinds of things just over our heads as we crawled through trenches. It was really loud and scarey. My ears rang for the next two days but I felt ok after that. The next time my ears acted up was each time we marched in the New York Pride Parade. When we are on Christopher street, in front of TY'S, the cheering and shouting is so loud, my ears start ringing. By the time we get down the street, I'm back to normal. If your ears don't clear up in a day or so, you should have a Doctor look at them.

I had the same thing while marching. I have an appointment in 90 minutes. Not playing games with this. Today I remembered that the last time I was at the range, someone was shooting before I had a chance to put my headset on but I didn't have the same thing happen that happened the other day. Also, I'm hoping the doctor will give my inner ears a good cleaning. Maybe he'll pull out a watermelon sized ball of wax! This has to get dealt with right away. I'm too dumb to learn American Sign Language.
