He wasn't a member here even though I asked him many times over the years. But he was a good friend and a long time member of GOAL New York dating back to just after the time I joined. He served as one of the earliest editors of the GOAL Gazette and as an Executive Board member for many years. He was a retired civilian member of the NYPD, a staff analyst. And he was active in numerous causes within the gay community and the LEO community. He loved the theater and Broadway and he loved life. He was the keeper of some of the history of GOAL, inheriting memorabilia from the late Police Officer Peter Guardino, another pioneer. And in July, he turned over the rest of that memorabilia to me. He had given me a lot of things a few years ago as well. He was diagnosed with cancer in late May and knew his time was short. He moved to Florida to be with his family for when the end would surely come. It came last night.
His name is Dick Walters and some of you know him. Some of you don't and for that, I feel bad. A wonderful person.

Dick Walters was one of the kindest, sweetest, nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. He was a great help to me when I edited the GOAL Gazette, providing a great column for each edition and providing me with old copies of the publication from his days as editor (from which I learned a lot). Always a warm hello, a warm smile, and never a bad word about anyone. I was proud to call him a friend and I will truly miss him. Thanks, Tommy, for putting up this tribute to him.

My Condolences
Words are so inadequate at times such as these. Yet, we have so much more than mere words to express. Yet, we look to words to express everything. When a look, a touch, a hug, a tear will do all to covey
The communion of a heartfelt condolence.
Death wins only once least we allow it any more than a moment of Life.
Mac
