Good Memory Helps Police Officers With Split-Second Decisions Police officers who are adept at multi-tasking are less likely to shoot an unarmed person when faced with a potentially dangerous, split-second decision, according to a new study. The study, conducted at Georgia State University, involved 24 urban police officers who completed a test of working memory capacity and then watched a video of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of the officer. The officers' stress levels and emotions were assessed based on heart rate and sweat measurements. Following the video, the officers participated in a computer-based simulation during which they were required to make sudden decisions on whether to shoot or not shoot someone. Officers then pressed either a "shoot" or "don't shoot" button. Link: Good Memory Helps Police Officers With Split-Second DecisionsFor what it's worth.....interesting article but in six months it may well be debunked by another study or claim. I don't think there's a textbook on the how's and why's of being involved in a shooting situation. Every situation is unique.

Hey Bluepride. I remember back in the mid 90s when a bunch of us met in Austin Texas, to rewrite the bylaws for Legal International, we had a chance to be tested on the "FATS MACHINE". It's a special video training machine that tests an officers reaction to potentially violent and deadly situations. You hold a gun and view an assault on a vodeo screen. If a perp draws a weapon, or you think he's going to draw a weapon, you have less than a moment to respond and then you are graded on the response. When It was my turn, I took the weapon and watched to see what the perp was going to do. When I saw him pulling out his gun, I fired two shots, one into his hand and one into his arm. With that, he dropped his gun and that was that. Next man up was Sgt. Morman Hill of the Boston Police Dept. He went right into a combat stance as he waited to see what the perp in his scene was going to do. The perp drew his gun, and Norman fired three shots right into the mans heart. The perp fell over dead. At that point, Norman looked over at me, smiled and said, "Social Worker!!!" I guess the bottom line is, when It's time to put somebody down, you just have to put them down!!!!!
