Here's a story on homophobia and sports from an English online site. A lot of what is said is on target. Too bad homophobia is as prevelant as it is in sports. But I do believe its changing. At glacier-like speed but that's better than nothing...... (Understand that when they talk about Football they mean soccer, which is called football in Europe!) TIMES ONLINE-FOOTBALL AND GAYS

Good article and insight ... thanks for the posting!
The statement about Rugby and "Ruggers" toward the article's end is pretty accurate. Ruggers are about the game, the win and the culture of the sport ... an excentric lot by American standards. As with all things, there are exceptions. Unfortunately, they most often show up on this side of the the Atlantic: i.e. FDNY v. Gotham this past '06 summer season. Low class, blue collar ignorance.
On to Baseball ...
GO METS ... ... '86 WILL happen again !

Tony Dungy comes off on TV as a real first class type guy. In person, he actually is! I had the unfortunate job of being the case detective for his son's death investigation here in Tampa. I was very straightforward with the Dungy's and felt that they appreciated that as well. Naturally Mrs. Dungy showed the pain a little more, but they were a great family to deal with. Some media mentioned last year, that maybe that was why the Colts didn't make it all the way last year, because Tony was distracted, but if so, he proved them wrong this year. I hardly heard Jamies death mentioned this year.

Dungy proves that you don't have to be a total meathead to be successful in Football. He's always shown himself to be a classy guy. I remember when his son died. He was given a lot of respect by his players and by personnel from other teams. That says a lot about him. His son's death was a tragedy, but if I remember correctly, he was doing things he shouldn't have been doing. Not judging him. No one is perfect. But yes, Dungy seems to be a class act. Unfortunately he was recently honored by some organization in Indiana that supports anti-gay initiatives in that state. My fear is that Dungy would be one of those "Christians" who engage in that un-Christian behavior of anti-gay bias. You know..."they're sinners...blah blah blah..." I hope I'm wrong on that though.

Yes, my COLTS are champs! You can call them a hometown team because I did live in Indianapolis for two and a half years. And yes Tommy, as you say I am well hung......er....I mean hung over. hahaha Just kidding. I had to work right after the game so I didnt drink at all. Now tonight I plan to go down to Indy and go drinking with my best friend, so look out! After that opening kick, I thought the Colts were gonna get smashed. But the better team did prevail. Scary thing is that the score really should have been about 48-17 instead of 29-17. The bears dodged alot of bullets with the Colts having to settle for field goals as much as they did. Sounds like the people of Indianapolis know how to celebrate a sports championship with class as well. The police reported that there were no major incidents related to celebrating fans, and that the only person arrested in relation to the celebrations was some drunken homeless guy. Hell up here we had more arrests related to happy fans. We had a few OWI's which were fans that had been drinking after the game and then tried to drive home. Me and my shift partner worked one of them that involved an accident.

<<And yes Tommy, as you say I am well hung....>> Now now now...you know I'd never say that! Anyway.....saw this article about Matthew Shepard's mom and her reaction to that stupid Snickers commercial during the Super Bowl. I for one, will resist buying anything made by the manufacturers of Snickers, Milky Way or anything related....until action is taken to show real contrition by the Snickers and Mars people. And not just some limp statement of apology. Article here: Matthew Shephard's Mum Upset By Snickers Advert

Gay Bloggers Denounce Snickers StuntFans of the peanut-based confectionary are encouraged to go to the Snickers website and vote on alternative endings to a commercial. 6th February 2007 PinkNews.co.uk A Snickers bar so scrumptious is brings two men into a full blown lip lock: A step forward for the gay community on television, until you see the reaction that follows. Fans of the peanut-based confectionery are encouraged to go to the Snickers website and vote on alternative endings to a commercial. The scenario finds two car mechanics munching through opposite ends of a Snickers bar until they meet in a passionate kiss, in a scene reminiscent of those two dogs in Disney classic Lady and the Tramp. Their reaction? Disgust as they rip all of the hair from their chest. Or, as you find from watching the alternate endings, downing a jug of motor oil after one says: "Quick, do something manly." The ending that has gay bloggers in an uproar? One of the mechanics smashing the other’s head under the hood of a car. Link to this article: GAY BLOGGERS DENOUNCE SNICKERS STUNT

Okay, I will undoubtedly earn the ire of a few of you who are more politically correct than I. Sorry, I saw the commercial, and I laughed my ass off. All those complaining about it might as well take up their hew and cry on behalf of slightly demented auto mechanics as on behalf of Gay men. I suppose it would have been more affirmative some how if as they chewed on that Snickers bar toward their lip lock, stars magically appeared and somehow these two dumb grease monkeys suddenly became suave, sophisticated and realized it was alright to kiss another man on the lips. Well sorry, that only happens in Holiwood and Russia. Frankly, I don't need a friggen candy bar commercial to affirm any thing about me. Humor is often the exaggeration of the obvious, and for my money that's probably pretty much what that commercial was about. If stereotyping bohters us so much why did so many of us in the community put up with the Jack character on Will and Grace all those years? He certainly wan't representative of me as a Gay man. The character reinforced the straight stereotype that all Gays are flamers. Well all aren't as we know, just as we're not all wandering around in Will's sort of vague fog. Was Jack's character in the series funny? Yeah sometimes in a banal or droll way, others in a truly knee slapping, belly laughing way. I grew up with ethnic humor, and yes some of it could be hurtful, and some of it was just plain silly and funny. Back then people mostly knew the difference, and if they were using ethnic humor to be evil, you knew it. I still laugh my ass off over a joke Flip Wilson used to tell, the punch line of which was, "Do you think it's too Polish?" If he were still alive, he probably couldn't tell it today, even though if you really listened to it, it was extremely sophisticated and was funny on about three different levels and the best part of all was realizing it was so much deeper than a simple reading of the language would suggest. He didn't tell it to demean Poles, or to be hurtful. He told it because it was funny. Sometimes, I think we all take ourselved too seriously. Lighten up folks! ;D

<<Sometimes, I think we all take ourselved too seriously. Lighten up folks! >>
Well...yeah Jim I agree, even though I'm the one who posted about this silly commercial. While I'm probably one of the most politically INcorrect gay guys out there (as many people can attest to) after initially laughing and enjoying the commercial, I did think about the ramifications of it. While I liked that two greasy non-model looking guys actually touched lips, the after part, where they ripped their bogus chest hair out was on one level, funny, but on another level....it was bad because it showed that two men HAD to be uncomfortable with even accidentally kissing. If it turned out that they both felt, "no big deal", well that would've been the perfect ending to the commercial. But I thought later, that "what if someone in a small burg somewhere saw that?" Someone who was younger and impressionable and thinking he (or she) might be gay and not know how to deal with it. It would be like a giant foot kicking them back into the closet and lodging that giant foot against the door so that the guy or girl never comes out.
I'm the FIRST one to laugh at myself and others (of our "persuasion") because we take ourselves oh too seriously at times over the silliest things. And again, I laughed at this commercial too, but under the surface, it bothered me a little. Maybe it shouldn't have, given how I poke fun at everyone, including myself. But, it kinda did. Anyway, it was taken off the Snickers website pronto and the expected limp apology was issued. I'll boycott Snickers for a few weeks now anyway. THAT'LL teach those muthaf*ckas!!

Well I think that commercial, and the endings you can no longer see on the website, is like a multiple edged sword. It can be taken a number of ways. I do see the problem with giving someone the option of chosing violence as the "solution". I googled the snickers commercial and saw some sites where people could post their reactions, and there was a decent amount of homophobic response to it. So if there is any "parody" intent, I'm guessing that only the people who are already pro gay to begin with found any parody in it. For those that are already homophobic, it seems to have just brought even more of it out. It would be nice if a commercial like this could really spark some genuine discussion of issues of homophobia, but all I think it does is galvanize the divide that alreadys exists between our supporters and detractors.
