The newbie called me and told me what happened to him. He said that GOAL was of no help. He asked me to help him. I stayed on the phone with him for about an hour and he explained everything to me. He has really done nothing wrong and they are screwing around with him just because he is gay. After telling him that his fight was not over, I sent him to Colleen. If anybody can save him, she can. It's a damm shame that a NYPD recruit has to come to Florida LEGAL for help because he didn't get any help from GOAL New York. As LGBT criminal justice professionals, It's our responsibility to band together and help each other no matter where we live. I will keep in touch with him, support him, and help him in any way I can. I'll keep you guys posted.

It's a shame that things are going so badly for GOAL in NY. Personally, I hate to seem like I'm always complaining about them, but damn, it's sooo justified. Pretty soon, it will all come out in the wash, as they say..... Things are not good and the fact that some boob referred a cadet who was on the list to become a Police Officer very soon, to another boob....who then didn't look out for this kid's interests, subsequently ruining his chances to be hired, is an absolute travesty. This poor kid has marched proudly with GOAL NY and had taken part in functions and has done work for the group, at risk to his own safety at times. And this is how he is re-paid. Once again, it comes down to people who are in it just for the title and not for the work. Such a lack of common sense and knowledge of the way things work. Again, soon enough, it will all be made public.

Let's just hope that they start publishing the GOAL Gazette on a more regular basis. I've often said that if you don't do a regular newsletter, the membership will have no idea what's going on, and they will think that the leadership is doing nothing. I just sent out the latest issue of our newsletter, The Florida LEGAL Brief. If anybody here want's to see a copy, just let me know as I always print up extras.

Carroll, I got my Florida LEGAL newsletter today. Great job as always. I see you got in a picture of the Florida LEGAL delegation that included our "Papa Admin" at the conference. I hope to make next years conference with y'all!

I related some of what happened at the meeting to Carroll this morning. The bald faced LIES, the accusations of divisiveness for pointing out that the organization has to comply with New York State LAW (gee..what a concept!), and the general "Us vs. Them" mentality that seemed to permeate the meeting. Right now I don't have time to post about the whole meeting but probably tonight or tomorrow, I'll post my observations and views of the evening. But that shouldn't stop anyone else from posting their thoughts, observations, views and opinions. I'm in no way, shape or form the guiding light of this board. Everyone has the right to express whatever they need to. I'd suggest that it go into another thread, though. Maybe one specifically addressing this situation or the one that deals with the "Problems Within GOAL".... I will say this now, though: I almost fell of my chair at some of the things that were said during the meeting. ie: "I don't march because everyone knows, I'm an Undercover!"

Where DO I begin? Don't hold your breath expecting the GOAL Gazette to again start publishing on a regular basis. More to the point, don't expect to have an idea what is going on even if it IS issued regularly.
When I was editor the GOAL Gazette was published every second month, under that name, as required in the By-laws. When I quit in February 2004 over attempts by the new president, Vivian Rodriguez, to censor its content, Carl Locke was appointed editor. His first issue was published in June, four months later. Four months after that, in October, he issued his second edition. The next was published five months later (March 2005), followed by one three months after that (June 2005). Not another issue was published by "editor" Locke who now holds the title of "president" of GOAL. If he wasn't interested enough to see that the newsletter was published regularly when he was personally responsible for it, don't expect him to see to it now... unless he has a personal agenda to promote.
As far as knowing what's going on, based upon what might be published, if it ever is, take THAT with a grain of salt as well. Editor, now president, Locke formed a twist on the New York Times' slogan "All the news that's fit to print." Under editor Locke the unstated slogan of the "newsletter" (more about that later) was "All the news that fits our views." GOAL By-laws clearly state that the GOAL Gazette is to be of, by and for the members to exchange their views, free from censorship. I, personaly, submitted a "letter to the editor" that criticized the Board and its handling of a particular matter. It never saw the light of day, and when I asked Carl about it I was told it was deemed "too divisive." Well, duh! If you can't take the heat, buster, get the hell out of the kitchen! A former Board member, not knowing at the time that I had stepped down as editor, sent HER "letter to the editor" to me. It, too, was critical of the Board but on a different subject. I forwarded it to Carl. It, too, never saw the light of day.
Shortly after Carl took over as "editor" (pardon me if I keep putting the word in quotes; I have a hard time swallowing if I don't) he decided...HE DECIDED...that he didn't like the name GOAL Gazette and was going to rechristen it GOAL NY. He mentioned it at a membership meeting after which I and two other members took him aside and pointed out that (a) the name GOAL Gazette had been coined by GOAL's founder, Charlie Cochrane, and it shouldn't be changed on that score alone; and (b) it is specifically identified as such in the By-laws and it would take an Amendment to the By-laws to effect the change that he wanted. So what does "editor" now "president" Carl Locke do? He publishes the next issue with a story stating, and I quote: "It's official! I have been appointed the editor of GOAL NY, formerly known as The Gazette, for the next year." The arrogance of this individual knows no bounds! He couldn't even state the "real" name of the newsletter correctly when he wrote his little article. And now he is president of the organization!
As noted above, the last newsletter issued by "editor" Locke was mailed in June 2005. After eight months had passed, with no communication, no word at all to the members as to what had been going on within the organization, I took it upon myself to put together a newsletter of my own, in February 2006, covering all that had happened in the two years since I had resigned as editor. I called it The Record and sent it out as an email attachment. Not being privy to the membership list I sent it to only those GOAL members who I knew personally and whose email address I had. I pulled no punches, and told it like it is. George Farrugia was president by that time and pulled me aside before the following meeting started. He was grinning. He asked if I "had gotten it out of my system," and I answered that indeed I had. He told me that there were those who were less than pleased with it, Carl Locke in particular. After the meeting was over, in an effort at smoothing ruffled feathers, I went up to Carl and said I was sorry to hear of his displeasure, that I didn't mean to offend, but that the members had a right to know what was going on and since he hadn't issued a newsletter in over eight months I did what I felt had to be done. He was not mollified. He thought it was... his favorite word, apparently ... "divisive". Fine. He's got a right to feel/believe whatever he wants. I did what I had to do.
Either as a coincidence (you decide) or as a consequence of my "initiative', all of a sudden the members began to receive an issue of the GOAL Gazette bi-monthly from that point forward. But it wasn't the "editor" who put it together. George Farrugia and his partner Anthony took the burden upon themselves.
Sorry for the length of this posting but for those who are interested, I just wanted to give you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Some of us still respect it, whether or not it is inconvenient or "divisive."

Hey Burner. Thanks for your insights into the history of the Goal Gazette. I have always believed that the editor of a newsletter has the responsibility to put it together as he sees fit. He has to be truthful and fair and he must operate free from anybody on the board telling him what to put in or not to put in the newsletter. Back when I was Goal's president, the editor was Jimmy A to Z. He is one of the nicest people I have ever known. He ran the newsletter and I had nothing to say about it. I didn't see the newsletter until I received mine, in the mail, just like everyone else. Sometimes, in his editor's piece, he said things I didn't agree with but his opinions were always valid and I supported his right to express them. The newsletter was his department and I left him alone to run it. By the way, he always did a great job. He kept the membership informed and that's what's important. Today, I'm the editor of the Florida Legal Brief and I run it just like Jimmy. Nobody on the board would ever censure anything I wanted to say. The newsletter does not have to be approved by the president before it goes out. He trusts me. The content is the editors responsibility and I don't take the job lightly. On many occasions, I have touched base with the board regarding fine points and issues before I go to print, but that's only in an effort to keep the newsletter accurate. In fact, I get input from the general membership and they often supply me with ideas and content for the newsletter. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Goal newsletter now that it's in the hands of questionable people. Time will tell.

Thank you for your kind words, Carroll. Taking on the role of editor of the Goal Gazette back then was easy. I simply applied desktop publishing to a well established periodical. I saw no reason to tinker with the product that Dick Walters created and that you had continued. It was fun, informative, and arrived ON TIME!
I can’t remember the last issue I received, or what it was called, for that matter. It could be that the demise of the Gazette has just been another indication that the organization has run its course. I am still working in 1 PP (HQ for those not in NYC) and can’t recall the last time I saw ANY poster or flyer on any bulletin board advertising a GOAL event. I’m not quite sure when it happened, but there was a distinct change in the direction of the organization that made the membership less important than political networking. That’s when I had enough. I seem to be shifting topics here, and should probably address the rest of my comments to a more appropriate thread. See you there…
