Caroll, I'd be interested in seeing your newsletter. Just get ahold of me by email (IndianaLawman@aol.com) and we can work that out. I just think it would be interesting to read. Maybe it would give me more insight into the workings of such a group.

Apologies to you non-NYers for this parochial posting but it touches on a topic Prydeguys posted recently that deserves comment.
Well, Carroll, I'm assuming that by now you've received your copy of the GOAL Gazette (if not, get hold of George and bitch like hell). Prior to this issue, the last time the GOAL Gazette masthead appeared was with the February 2004 edition. It's nice to see it back, and it was a pleasant surprise.
Kudos to George and his partner Anthony (mostly Anthony, I'm guessing, based on conversations I've had) for publishing an issue that took a lot of work to put together, and I do mean a LOT of work (been there, done that). Your comments to George were right on target "...without a newsletter, the membership has no way of knowing what's going on in the organization." I do believe those comments have been taken to heart, which is good for the membership. Of course, this isn't something George, himself, should be doing. He has enough responsibilities as president without taking on work that others should, rightfully, be doing. If he's to be faulted for anything it's for picking up the pieces when others drop the ball, and for not making a public issue of the fact that they did drop the ball! Some people need to be embarrassed to make them s*** or get off the pot; of course there are some who are incapable of embarrassment, but that's another story.
So, it's off to a good start: "newsletters" back on a bi-monthly schedule since February, more "meat" in the newsletter than there has been in two years, and the name GOAL Gazette reintroduced. Let's hope the momentum continues.

Being the President of G.O.A.L. or any organization like it is ONE TOUGH JOB!
As far back as the early 90s when I first joined G.O.A.L. N.Y., I immediately saw what a President, as well as other positions within the organization, have to deal with ...
A WHOLE LOT OF WORK, LITTLE HELP, DEALING WITH MAJOR ATTITUDES AND PERSONALITIES, AND ALL DONE WITH LITTLE, IF ANY THANKS OFFERED! (Also true of chairing G.O.A.L. events.)
George, an over worked prosecutor, is doing his best. Is there any room for the ideal ascent to perfection? Sure, I expect so ... but, who of us are perfect? I distinctly recall a former president of G.O.A.L. N.Y. once saying to me, when I chaired (and made happen solo) an annual dinner: "You just can't please everybody, and cops are real complainers. Just do your best." If not for that offering of support, for which I was and remain beholden ... I'd have walked! (I'll not mention any names, Admin. )
It's the frank honesty, the setting aside of personal ego and interest, and the common focus shared that will continue to make things better for all today and in years to come.
I've little doubt that those on the job under the age of 30 or 35, be they in Police, Fire or EM services, can't help but be inclined to take acception to this, but ...
FOR BETTER OR WORSE, Y'ALL SHOULD GET ON YOUR KNEES AND KISS THE ASSES OF THOSE WHO HAVE PAVED THE WAY ! YOUR JOB AND YOUR LIFE ARE, AND WILL CONTINUE TO GET BETTER BECAUSE OF THOSE WHO, WELL KNOWN OR NOT, WENT THROUGH HELL ON THE JOB AND HAVE WORKED TO CHANGE THINGS !
For those curious about G.O.A.L., L.E.G.A.L. or FIREFLAG, and are considering joining or starting a chapter or an organization like them ... I sincerely hope I've not put you off. If anything, the intention is quite the opposite! The only inetention here is to keep it real, honest, and to recall a standard that is befitting the uniforms worn, the professions commited to, and the level of dignity and equal rights that should be, rightfully, in place. Yes, it will take time, courage, and effort. But, for the moment ... we certainly DO NOT have to live up to the expectations and stereotypes of those who oppose us !!!
(Maybe, I'm just another complainer ... )

Would have cc'd you, but don't have you email address. Just wanted you to know you're not alone on this one.

Does GOAL allow members from outside the NYC area? I emailed the Pres. a long time ago about joining and he never replied.

GOAL has always had members from different parts of the country. Unfortunately, it's not surprising that you didn't hear back from them when you e-mailed them about joining. If you want, I'll let the current President know that you're looking to join. And I'll keep after him to make sure you're given an application. Just let me know and I'll follow through. I'll make sure you don't get blown off this time.

USPP, there is a GOAL chapter in your own back yard. There should be no problem with you joining them at all. It was called GOAL DC, but now is Mid-Atlantic GOAL. You should contact Scott Gunn (a member of this board, i think with the screen name rscottgunn) for more info.

Well, well, well....will wonders never cease??!! You finally got a GOAL Gazette!!!! If I were you, I'd treasure it because it's probably the only one you're going to receive in the next couple of years now that King Karl Lockjaw is running things. I heard he had a hand in basically ending a newbie's career before it even started because of his incompetence! Maybe now that you actually received this newsletter, when election time comes around, you'll actually receive a ballot. That would be too much to hope for I guess, huh?
