I love it when are part of an organization and they give out awards to political people and not people from the organization. WTF?

Unfortunately there are groups out there that would rather publicly lick the bung hole of a political hack than recognize the members of their organizations that have continuously supported their group with time, effort, money and personal sacrifice. What they fail to realize is that, as I've said time and time again, the politician will throw you under the bus in heartbeat if it's politically expedient. Kinda makes you think about how much some groups value their membership, don't it?

Florida LEGAL has a different policy at our awards presentations. Here at Florida LEGAL we do present The Community Service Award to a non law enforcement activist who has distinguished themselves in service to the LGBT Community. This year it goes to Nadine Smith of Equality Florida. The other major awards always go to members of our organization who have worked very hard promoting our issues in criminal justice. This year, at our banquet, the Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Lt Commander Mark Alan Newby of the Key West Police Dept. The Outstanding Achievement Award will go to Officer James Young of the Orland Police Department. We put our members ahead of everyone else.

I don't think the issue is black and white. Yes, members of an organization should be recognized for work they do (or have done) to support the organization and further its purposes. But let's face it: The purpose of the organizations we belong to is, among other things, to secure and preserve equal treatment and benefits for their members both within "the department" and the community itself. And like it or not, securing and preserving these things are political actions which require support and assistance from those holding rank or political office. Publicly recognizing those who use their power to help us achieve our objectives is not only right, it is smart. We all have ego, none more so than a politician. They love the awards and the attention and many (most?) will remember those who have shown appreciation for their past efforts. Many (most?) will also remember those groups who have NOT shown some sort of appreciation for assistance given.
It's a win-win situation to give an award to a "name" whether it be internal (a Deputy Commissioner) or external (a State Senator). If they do nothing else for you in the future, you've lost nothing. If they DO provide future assistance you may never know if recognizing them in the past had anything to do with it or not...but you'll know for sure that it didn't hurt. And besides, a "name" award recipient helps sell tickets to the affair which, in return, puts money into the organization's treasury.
Each organization has its own policy with regard to "recognition awards" and I believe GOAL New York has a good one. Only two awards are mandated in the rules. The Charles Cochrane Award, GOAL's highest honor, is named for the organization's founder and must go to a member of the organization. The Erin J. O'Reilly Memorial Award, named for a beloved and active member who died much too young, may be presented to anyone, member or not; it is intended to be presented to someone whose action(s) as a member within the criminal justice system is/are believed to be deserving of special recognition. The Board of Directors may decide, each year, to present additional awards as it sees fit and, while the Board has the final say, it is supposed to solicit and evaluate nominations for recognition from the membership.

Points taken, I guess, although I still don't believe in aligning myself too closely with any politician within the framework of an organization. And, of course, this thread isn't about any GOAL groups, as you know. Just thought I'd mention that!
