Thank you, Tommy, for keeping the flame alive. I wanted to contribute, myself, but as I sat in front of the monitor, fingers posed on the keyboard, I realized I couldn't improve on the words I wrote on the first anniversary of the attack on our city and our nation. So, asking for your indulgence, and that of other BluePride members,I'd like to contribute the editorial I wrote and published in the October 2002 edition of the GOAL Gazette .....
Remembering the Heroes of 9/11 There is little more that can be said, that has not already been said, about the heroic deeds of the heroic men and women who lost their lives in the performance of their duty on September 11, 2001. They were New York City’s Finest and Bravest, doing what they were trained to do, yet tested to the limits of endurance in a scenario none could ever imagine, much less be prepared for. They were off-duty yet they came from all over to help wherever they could. They joined their fellow firefighters and police officers and rushed into the buildings from which others were desperately fleeing. They were courageous court officers, they were valorous police officers working for the Port Authority. Their actions were no less responsible than their more widely acclaimed NYPD and FDNY colleagues for saving thousands of lives at the World Trade Center. They were average citizens. Untrained and unprepared for what they knew they must do they overpowered the low-life scum that had hijacked an airplane. In so doing they prevented not only the loss of additional life but, potentially, the shaking of our government to its very foundations, had the plane crashed into either the White House or the U.S. Capitol, it’s suspected targets. Thousands died in the terrorist attack on our country September 11, 2001. Many were innocent victims, in the wrong place at the wrong time who had no control of their fate. Others performed extraordinary acts of heroism, giving their lives that others may live. None who died that day will ever be forgotten, but it is fitting and proper that those who made the ultimate sacrifice be memorialized. Members of the NYPD and the FDNY have been cited and eulogized, and rightfully so. All too often, however, lost in the rush to print or sound-bite is recognition of the other heroes of that day: Port Authority police officers, Court Officers and the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93. In this issue of the GOAL Gazette we pay tribute to all of them. Remember them always.
