I can't believe they maced that woman for offering them a flower. She would have been better off if she had offered them a donut!!!

They should have just knocked her over and trampled right over her. hehe I guess holding a flower means that you no longer have to follow rules or orders. I wonder if the woman ended up going to jail for obstruction or something of the sort, or if she just got to take her macing and go home. Either way she got what her hippie self asked for and deserved.
I guess I have to give a little credit to republicans. Other than guys like Fred Phelps, you don't see them make stupid protests at events. But the far left wing loves getting all the kooks out in the open to make asses of themselves at events like this.

Hey Hoosiercop, you know I never really thought about it but perhaps I'm a closet left wing liberal after all. I bet that woman would not have been maced if she had offered them a supply of stun guns, clips of amunition and a few more cans of tear gas!!! How does that sound for a bleeding heart liberal? I think I'd better shut up before Bluepride kicks me off the site!!!

No Carroll, I'm not gonna throw you off the site. But what you've said is a clear indication of what we've said over the years. That you don't think like a cop. You've improved over the years but this a backslide for you, in my opinion. Any time anyone interferes in any police operation, whether a demonstration or marching in formation to a police operation, deserves what they get. And this dope got off easily. It would've been more apropos if she got the butt of a nightstick to her chin, causing her bottom teeth to come out the top of her head. This is 2008, not 1967. It's a post 9/11 world. The rules have changed. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine this flower carrying hippy to be a suicide bomber. Yes, even in the USA. I'm not a liberal, conservative or republican. Those terms among others are insults to me. It's just that I deal in reality. I don't live with my head in the sand as some do. Even here. And even though I tell people here that they have to be thick skinned, I'm beginning to feel like I have a target on my back with some of the comments over the last few weeks. I had to get that off my chest. But I still love you all.

Oh my God. Bluepride, where did you find that video I am happy to stand corrected. I see now what you mean when you say that anyone can have a bomb. That woman with the flower could have been hiding a bomb under her clothes. A weapon like that could kill lots of cops in close quarters. That's why, when a cop says "move back' people should follow his orders or risk getting maced. Those of us in correction have always had an advantage. We know who the bad guy is. We have no trouble identifying them because they are sitting in the jails when we go to work. The police don't have it so good. The bad guy could be anybody at any place or any time. You're right, I'm getting better but I still think like a CO instead of a PO. But bear with me, I'm working on it.

Carroll if she had offered them that stuff, they would have taken the stuff, then maced her! hehehe
Some people think that they have total and absolute freedom. Problem is that is a concept that does not and cannot even exist. Even in this "free" country, freedom only goes so far. There are limits, and there always has to be a balance between individual rights and societal interests. Yeah, normally that woman would have the right to stand next to a cop and offer him/her a flower. But in that situation, with police having the job of dealing with a riot, to protect societal interests and individual interests, she no longer had the right to be standing there in the way of the officers that were trying to help protect people. Should officers have to stop trying to quell the riot because of one idiot with a flower. Hell no! Sorry about her luck. Some people get so caught up in their ideals that they lose touch with reality. And what really was her message anyway? "please cops, stop trying to help people by putting down the riot"? The cops actually were trying to promote peace by taking the steps necessary to bring the riot to an end. If the cops stood back and let things go while singing kum-by-ya with all the hippies, A LOT more people would have been hurt, and A LOT more property would have been damaged. Maybe she should have tried to give the flower to one of the other idiots who was causing the problems. Maybe she should have picked a better symbol too.....flowers die too fast. hehe

While a bit hammy, I like that video. We need to make one like it here.

That's a great video. It should remind us all never to forget that our jobs are often routine, but punchuated with moments of absolute terror!!! I was very impressed with the design of the intake cubicle, small, compact and easy to control. For me, the intake areas are the most dangerous because prople are coming in right from the street and they can be carrying anything, not just weapons but also disease. So, heads up everybody. Look sharp and stay safe.

WOW... yes, that intake video is adrenalin-pumping. Carroll is right in mentioning, along with security awareness, the DISEASE safety aspects of working in our profession as well. Being that I was on the medical/psychiatric staff at Pelican Bay State Prison (California's highest super-max,) we had to be aware of Hepatitis C, TB - the whole list of dangerous infections - with EVERY inmate contact (and other staff, for that matter!) Two of my co-workers were Hep C positive.
Pathogens are EVERYWHERE. Handwashing is essential. Gloves are imperative... but remember, it doesn't help to wear gloves and then rub your eyes with your gloved hand! I've even seen medical staff holding something with one hand and then remove a glove from their other hand by biting and pulling the cuff band of the other hand (or biting the glove fingertips and pulling the glove off that way!) GAD!!! That's MEDICAL staff! Guess they never learned about the FECAL-ORAL route of disease transmission!
